The Centro Oriental de Ecosistemas y Biodiversidad (BIOECO), founded on June 5, 1993, has a clear and ambitious mission. Its goal is to conduct specialized and interdisciplinary studies in the eastern region of Cuba to define and characterize areas of interest for biodiversity, establishing methods for their conservation and sustainable development. With a vision to become a recognized center of excellence at the national and international level, BIOECO strives to increase knowledge of biological diversity and promotes nature as part of culture. Its specific objectives include deepening understanding of ecosystems, coordinating programs for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and strengthening its structure and resources to fulfill its important mission.

BIOECO is an implementing partner in the CCR project, and mainly focuses on the southeastern part of the island of Cuba, specifically on the south side of the Sierra de la Gran Piedra, which includes one of the most densely populated areas of the Baconao Biosphere Reserve. It is worth noting that the project's area of work at BIOECO includes the Archaeological Landscape of the First Coffee Plantations in the Southeast of Cuba, located in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra, to the east and west of Santiago de Cuba, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
